Fiberglass, Batts and Blankets

Batts are precut, whereas blankets are available in continuous rolls. Compressing the material reduces its effectiveness. Cutting it to accommodate electrical boxes and other obstructions allows air a free path to cross through the wall cavity. One can install batts in two layers across an unfinished attic floor, perpendicular to each other, for increased effectiveness at preventing heat bridging. Blankets can cover joists and studs as well as the space between them. Batts can be challenging and unpleasant to hang under floors between joists; straps, or staple cloth or wire mesh across joists, can hold it up.

Gaps between batts (bypasses) can become sites of air infiltration or condensation (both of which reduce the effectiveness of the insulation) and requires strict attention during the installation. By the same token careful weatherization and installation of vapor barriers is required to ensure that the batts perform optimally. Air infiltration can be also reduced by adding a layer of cellulose loose-fill on top of the material.

Blown-In Insulation

Blown insulation, also called loose fill insulation, is commonly used to insulate existing structures that previously had no insulation, or where additional insulation is needed. It is made up of loose particles which are blown into anattic or into wall cavities, which are the spaces between the interior and exterior walls of a building. Since even distribution of the material is important, and because special pneumatic equipment is required, installation is usually done by a professional.

There are three basic types of blown insulation commonly available. Fiberglassinsulation consists of small particles of spun glass fibers. Mineral wool is made from particles of rock or steel slag, which is a recycled manufacturing waste. Cellulose insulation comes from recycled newspapers or cardboard which has been treated with chemicals to make it resistant to flame and insects. 

Spray Foam Insulation

Spray foam insulation is an alternative to traditional building insulation such as fiberglass. A two-component mixture comes together at the tip of a gun, and forms an expanding foam that is sprayed onto concrete slabs, into wall cavities, or through holes drilled in into a cavity of a finished wall.

Spray foam insulation is typically non-toxic. After being sprayed, it expands to roughly 100 times its original volume. As a result, it is able to fill vacant air gaps, and will expand and contract in relation to the building.

Benefits

Spray foam insulation saves on energy costs and lowers utility bills. Studies by the US Department of Energy show that 40% of a home's energy is lost as the result of air infiltration through walls, windows and doorways. Buildings treated with spray foam insulation typically insulate as much as 50% better than traditional insulation products. 

Insulation that is sprayed in buildings reduces moisture, which can lead to harmful mold and mildew. Eliminating mold growth reduces the likelihood of rotting wood in a home, and allergic reactions to mold spores. 

In addition to building temperature and moisture control, spray foam insulation is often used to reduce noise. Foam insulation serves as a barrier to airborne sounds, and reduces airborne sound transfer through a building's roof, floor and walls.
